Indigenous content for the classroom

Help your students explore Indigenous song, language and culture by getting them involved in Australia’s largest virtual community orchestra project, the AMEB Online Orchestra.

Instrumentalists or singers of any ability can join. Simply learn the song, record your performance, upload it to the website and it will be included in the showcase video performance.

In 2021, the orchestra will perform an original indigenous song called Morning Star and Evening Star, written by Candace Kruger, a Yugambeh songwoman and Indigenous ethnomusicologist along with co-writers Lann Levinge and Isobella Kruger. It’s based on an Aboriginal lullaby sung to Lottie Eaton (nee Levinge) and tells the story of two stars seen in the Australian skies.

Learning Resources are available to support participants to explore and teach the cultural aspects of Morning Star and Evening Star. They are split into two parts:

  1. Morning Star and Evening Star Resources

A collection of documents, audio and visual files that are FREE for all. These resources include the songline, poems, translations, pronunciation guides and cultural context.

  1. Suggested Learning Plans mapped to the National Curriculum

These excellent lesson plans are mapped to the National Curriculum and are relevant for teachers of music, visual art, humanities and English across P-10.

A small fee is attached to each Learning Plan package, the profits of which will be returned to the Yugambeh community where this songline originated, via the Yugambeh Youth Aboriginal Corporation.

Learning Resources now available

To help our Online Orchestra participants and any teachers who want to explore the cultural aspects of Morning Star and Evening Star, we have produced a set of Learning Resources. They fall into two sections:

 

  • Morning Star and Evening Star Resources.

A collection of documents, audio and visual files that are FREE for all. Prepared by Candace Kruger and Paula Nihot these resources include the songline, poems, translations, pronunciation guides and cultural context.

  • Suggested Learning Plans

These excellent lesson plans are mapped to the National Curriculum and provide teachers ideas for each year level.  Written and prepared by Candace Kruger and Leanne Kuss.

The Learning Plans align with the National Curriculum in the Arts – Music, Dance, Drama and Media; and English – Language and Literature.  They are available for students in P-10, and will provide you with ideas of how to teach the song, learn the cultural history of the songline and pronounce the Yugambeh words.
